Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left the family, and so she was taken care of by her mother, grandmother and godparents. She suffered from an anxiety disorder based on word associations as a young toddler. Ford began performing in her teens, and was an actor in the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she was a poor for the school. Ford reapplied to Central School of Speech and Drama and, after the fourth time she applied she was eventually accepted. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among her classmates. Ford graduated in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut, appearing as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in such television shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London Burning. Tate also regularly worked as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season 2000-2001. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedies, that were added to her repertoire in 1996.
